Oh, Happy Day

Had I posted yesterday, the title of the post would have read very differently!!

Yesterday, was just one of those days and as I was sitting on the couch mulling it over with Micah, I remembered the BAD day I had last month when I wondered if it was cyclical and told Micah we should pay attention to the date the next time I had a bad day. Interestingly, it was the same time last month...are you thinking what I'm thinking?
Yes indeed, I think I'm suffering from PMS and it's taken me 28 years to realize it. I'm sure there are factors (1. Jaden 2. Beckam, etc.) that make it more noticeable now than at other times in my life. I'm not embarassed to admit it because I'm actually glad there's an explanation. I'm wondering if any of you share this condition with me and what you do about it?!

Today was a FABULOUS day!
  1. Beckam and I were out of the house at 10 am this morning, finished our WalMart shopping trip in 45 min. and made it back to pick up Jaden from school with 20 min. to spare!
  2. Beckam took a 3 hour nap today!
  3. Micah came home while Beckam was napping and played Bocce outside with Jaden while I played on the computer for a few minutes and then visited with some friends outside.
  4. We took a trip to IKEA after Beckam woke up. Just the thought that we have an IKEA 15 min. from our house makes me so happy! I returned some stuff we didn't use from our reunion and got a $50 credit, which paid for all the purchases I made today. I thought a $50 gift card to IKEA was a suitable reward for all my hard work on the reunion. We had a fabulous meal there, which of course included Swedish meatballs but I had something even more delish. It was a breast of chicken covered with a thin slice of fresh ham and a lemon-garlic cream sauce, along with mashed potatoes and fresh veggies!!! Leave it to FOOD to make my day! We enjoyed our meal while the boys sat at their own little table next to ours in the play area, watched Aladdin and played with the wooden train. I also found the little glass bowls I was searching for to serve my butternut squash soup in for a whopping .59 cents. I bought 15. We had $23 left on our card after we checked out so we spent the remaining balance on Swedish delicacies: chocolate tort, lingonberry cheesecake, swedish "rats," double chocolate crisps and Remi (chocolate covered wafers with mint cream).
  5. We got home just in time for me to head off to Farmer's Market for Mutual tonight where I enjoyed an excellant evening with the Young Women of the Davis 1st Ward!
  6. I'm so grateful BAD days are few and far between and that GREAT days follow!!

Top Ten Reasons to LOVE the Great Kern County Fair

10. The option to ride an elephant or pony and have your picture taken

9. The pig, turkey and dog races

8.
The art exhibits from the local elementary, junior high and high schools

7. The "Lights, Camera, Animals" show staring Hollywood's best, including baboons, even a
Mandrill, birds, goats and dogs. Our own Morganne Hill, World's Most Devoted Animal Friend and Rescuer was selected as the star of the show!

6. The FFA and 4H animals, especially the laboring cows that no one I know has actually ever seen give birth. I think I almost did...once...I think. (Dear Cows, I wouldn't give birth in front of all those gawkers either)

5. The self-esteem boost you receive from hanging out with the carney's and the rest of Bakersfield's Best

4. The trampoline bungee jumping thing that Jaden finally figured out how to do flips on like the rest of the Hill cousins

3. Wristbands for the kids: rite of passage to all the rides as many times as their hearts desire, including the Tilt O' Whirl (a.k.a Teacups to Jaden). Jaden was the only kid I saw climb halfway out of the horizontal rockets before it actually came to a stop. He didn't try that again.

2. It's a Nilsson, Hill, Hicks Family Affair. We had 10 Adults and 13 kids with us. You would be amazed at our coordination!

1. REALLY, it's all about the FOOD...ready?:
Baked potatos and yummy yams from the Boys Scouts of America Booth, apple
dumplings from Teen Challenge, fresh taquitos garnished generously with fresh guacomole, funnel cakes, deep fried twinkies, frozen bananas and homemade corndogs.

YES, besides the twinkie, this was all consumed, by me, in one afternoon. Our planning was very strategic so that we could fit it all in.

The good news: I didn't eat every item all by myself (with the exception of the corn dog) but I enjoyed every bite!! We also drank lots of water, which I always think helps...a little.

This should serve as proof to my family that my whole foods eating practices are not too finatic!!

Lately...

We celebrated our 3rd annual
Diez

(Chile's Independance Day) with the Moore's.

We ate empanadas and the boys got to wear their manta's that Grandma Kippy brought back for them from Chile (wonder what they'll get from Africa?).

School Picture Day

Sporting a new haircut (I asked the guy, who was obviously new and had clearly never cut a kid's hair before, to keep the length and after one miserable HOUR, this is what we got. Jaden was such a great sport...mostly).
He loves posing for the camera and needs no prodding.

Score!!

Awaiting the arrival of something I've ordered is torturous for me. I check the tracking information daily and just hope it will come early. It doesn't matter how big or small, significant or not, I'm just impatient and perhaps impuslive...and want things NOW.

Today, I scored. Two things in one day.

We've been using one of the Calder's helmets for Beckam since their little guy wasn't quite ready for it but then they moved to Maryland so we had to give it back.

That put us in the market for a new helmet. There are some advantages to being the oldest: Jaden gets the new helmet and Beckam gets Jaden's old one, which isn't too shabby. We're pretty fanatic about the fit of our kid's safety gear and the old helmet is a PERFECT fit (with the adjustable clasp to secure around the back of the head) but Jaden really likes the skate helmets that kids are using for bike helmets. I was a little apprehensive because I wanted to be sure these skate helmets were safe enough for bike riding, too.

Our neighbor has a very cool bike/skate helmet that fits Jaden great and both of our boys love to wear it. Since we didn't recognize the brand and had no idea where to find it (they got their's out of the freebie bin in the laundry room), we picked one similar to it from WalMart. No luck. The fit was pathetic and slid back and forth and all over his head. So we took it back and checked some others out at the skate shop in town to no avail.

Well leave it to the trustee internet! We found our neighbors very helmet on-line and it was actually advertised as a bike helmet!! The key is making sure helmets comply with CPSC Safety Standards, which it did!! Jaden picked it out himself and we've been anxiously awaiting it's arrival all the way from
Massachusetts . It arrived today...not a day earlier than the estimated delivery date. With our kind of boys, having a good helmet is a neccesity and it serves all purposes (skating, biking, rollerblading, wearing it at the playground like Beckam did for three hours today, etc). This is where we found it, in case you're intersted: http://www.hardheadedsports.com/prclbihered.html

The other surprise was the bottle of OH! de Moschino perfume. When I was at my sister's house last, I sampled this scent and after spraying it I let out some kind of hoot and holler because I loved it so much. Today, it arrived in the mail. My husband is such a sweetheart and loves me so much!! Thank You, Micah! I LOVE you, too!

The Birds AND the Bees!!

Jaden was educated this afternoon on the playground of Solano Park (not at school) about S-E-X. And although he can't quite remember what it's called, he remembers ALL the details.
"You lay in the bed together, on top of each other, naked with your private parts touching. And that's the only way you can get children, right mom? Is that what you do?"
Me, dumbfounded, "Well, yeah, but...," trying to grasp that I'm acutally having this conversation with my FOUR year old!

It all goes back to that girlfriend situation. Some of the older kids on the playground have caught on to their "relationship" even though our kids are completely innocent about it. They hardly even play together now but the titles remain. Kaylin, "the girlfriend" used it as a threat yesterday when Jaden wouldn't let her have a turn riding the tractor:
Kaylin: "You are SELFISH! Do you know what SELFISH means? It means you have to let me ride the tractor. If you don't let me have a turn Jaden, I won't be your girlfriend anymore."
Anyway, today an older boy was teasing them saying, "Jaden loves Kaylin" while Jaden was on one end of the playground and Kaylin on the other. Then an older little girl whispers "a secret" to Kaylin with Micah watching all the while never suspecting what the secret actually entailed.

He thought the secret was that Jaden wanted to marry her...Wow, was he wrong--she skipped that part completely.

We later learned that the older girl began giving explicit instructions to Kaylin on how to carry out the act and then went over to where Jaden was playing on the bars and educated him. Who would suspect...with Micah sitting right there?!
When asked what his response was, Jaden said, "WOW!!"
It was actually a great and probably very appropriate time for us to have this conversation so he doesn't have to rely on his peers for information of this nature. We were all laying in bed reading scriptures together when it came up. Thankfully, I had been cued by Kaylin's mom so that I would have the opportunity to talk to him about it.

We had a great discussion where I told him that this is not a conversation that children should be having together. That it is up to mommy's and daddy's to teach their children about those things and not other children. We told him that if children have questions about their bodies, they need to talk to their parents.

We told him that only adults have children and explained that mommy and daddy were best friends from the time they were little kids and that we rollerbladed together, went to dances together and became best friends. Then we each decided that we loved each other more than any other boy/girl in the whole world and so we got married. After that we waited two years, until we had enough money (well--ideally, right?), a place to live and were really ready to have children and take care of them. We asked him if children were easy to take care of and he emphatically replied, "No! Beckam whines and is a lot of work."

We also explained what can happen if people have children before they're ready and how sometimes they have to give their babies to other families who can take care of them (of course we explained how wonderful it is for the family that gets the baby, which he is very familiar with because our good friends here were just able to adopt).

It all seemed to sink in and he was very interested and affected by what we were saying. We asked him to promise that he would not discuss these things with other children since it was not his job and to let the kids know that he was only 4 3/4 and didn't need to worry about it for a long time. I told him he should then run off to play.
He said, "I'll just tell them that I'm 4 and I won't run off because that would be rude."
Point taken. So hopefully we're on the same page and he doesn't do any educating about this newly acquired information. I think we'll be just fine. I did have a nice talk with the girl's parents and they were surprised but aware of when she was educated by an older boy a few years ago and so it goes....

Have you had the opportunity to have "the talk" with your kids? Were they FOUR?!!

So Far So Good.

It was only the first day but it's a good start. His class is structured much like his preschool was. The first 45 min. is free play in stations (including play dough, reading, science and play kitchen/restaurant). They even have circle time with stories and singing. He goes from 11:45-3:05 with a recess and snack time mixed in. There will be an academic component towards the middle of the year, which will be great timing for our situation. We LOVE his teacher. She's middle-aged and seems really on the ball. Yesterday, the parents went to an open house with the kids for an hour just to get acquainted with the classroom and to meet her. She spent the entire time walking around with a clip board observing the children. I was impressed when I approached her for the first time that she knew exactly who my child was and brought to my attention that she had read my note (which was included in all the paperwork we turned in before school even started) and agreed that we'd work closely on his progress. She was so perceptive.

Jaden's favorite part of the day: RECESS!! And there was nothing that he didn't like about kindergarten.

Now, remember the original plan was to do spanish immersion this year and repeat regular kindergarten next year when we move (since he wouldn't be up to speed to go to regular 1st grade coming from spanish immersion kindergarten). He's now #1 on the waitlist for spanish immersion so we may have another big decision ahead of us.

Jaden and his "Girlfriend."

We don't know where this came from but it has been going on for a couple of weeks now. She lives in our complex. According to Jaden, she's not just someone he likes to play with at the playground, she's his "girlfriend" so they spend all their time together and his job is to protect her and apparently to make sure she's happy since he bought her a late birthday present the last time we went to the store, insists we get enough donuts for her, etc. He's quite the gentleman. It's so interesting to watch how he treats her. It doesn't matter who he's playing with or what he's doing, if she comes to the playground, he's with her.

They go to the same school but are not in the same class. She goes to the AM session but they were very excited to see each other coming and going at school today. She's a sweetheart. They went to dollar scoop night at BaskinRobbins this evening.

This is another friend who lives in our complex that is in his class and is also in his primary class at church so they've enjoyed pal'n around together, although, I heard the "girlfriend" ask him today if SHE was his girlfriend. Uh-oh, here we go.....

Is It Really Time?

Jaden McKay Maika'i, 2 1/2
I've been adament since the time of his birth that Jaden would not go to kindergarten until he was almost 6 since he has a Nov. birthday (that would be next year). All the kindergaten teachers I'm acquainted with along with others I've talked to have supported this decision...all but my husband (he says he's been supportive just open-minded).

So recently, as we're trying to decide what to do next year since we didn't get into any of the preschools we applied to this year,
(he's been in an incredible co-op preschool for the last two years where he learned amazing problem solving and social skills and I learned a lot about parenting)
Micah comes up with this grand plan:
Jaden can start kindergarten this year and then repeat it again next year when we move elsewhere. It's free and will give him the advantage when he goes again next year.
I thought it seemed a bit ridiculous but then he came up with this one:
We'll start him in the spanish immersion kindergarten here and then have him repeat regular kindergarten next year.
I thought that made more sense but was determined to consult with my kindergarten sources before making any decisions on the matter.

Surpisingly, they thought it was a wonderful idea. I was even more assured since we just spent two days hanging out with one of my sources who's taught kindergarten for at least 20 years and is the mother of four FABULOUS children and the other is my mother-in-law, retired kindergarten teacher of 10 years and mother of six FABULOUS children, who also knows Jaden quite well.

Now, we're just waiting. We're only one week away and all the classes are full. We have all our paperwork in so we'll see what happens. He'll either get admitted to the Spanish Immersion program or overflowed to a regular kindergarten class.

It's such little time for me to emotionally prepare for this. I just can't imagine him being on a big playground with all these other strange kids I don't know. The good thing, is that he won't be. He'll be in a smaller fenced play area with only the kindergartners. That makes me feel better.

Sacramento Temple Open House

Our family attended the Sacramento Temple Open House today.

When a new temple is built, it's opened up to the public to tour for about a month before it's dedicated. It's such a wonderful opportunity for those not of our faith to experience the beauty of a temple and learn more (click here) about the sacred work we do within its walls. Jaden's favorite part was "the room with all the jewelry," which was the celestial room that had a magnificent chandelier in the center and similar but smaller one's around the room covering the lights. Amazingly, this was the only room that Beckam whispered in, until we were leaving that is, when he yelled, "bye, bye." The boys enjoyed the tour. We're so excited for the dedication so that we can attend more regularly without having to drive to Oakland. We're only 30 min. away now.

The temple and the grounds surrounding it are so peaceful and tranquil. In the heart of a busy city, it's set up on a hill nestled adjacent to a grassy grove of mature trees with benches scattered throughout.

It's such a great place for introspection and meditation...and wrestling if you're two little Nilsson boys. We LOVE to visit the temple!!

And here are the shots Jaden took of us (see comments):

Mission Accomplished!!

We just returned from a trip home to good ole' Bakersfield! After one year of planning, organizing, calling, emailing, pleading, screaming and otherwise getting our ten year high school reunion to happen...it DID!! Although the week prior meant reverting back to my college days sleep schedule, practically abandoning my kids (with family members who literally lined up to help out) and questioning whether or not I'd actually have enough energy to attend the festivites, the events went off without a hitch and a GREAT time was had by all.

We kicked off with a picnic and White Water Rafting (thanks to Darron, Micah's bro. who owns River's End Rafting and Adventure Co.). We had a perfect turnout and the greatest bunch of volunteers (mom, dad, nieces, mom-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-laws) to make sure all the details were in order and that the kids were safe while their parents rafted. One of my best friends from high school had a small get together that evening and then the following night was the BIG event. At last count, we had 140 people. It was Perfect. Everybody was having so much fun reconnecting that very few people were even on the dance floor. It was so great to see so many people that you share so many different memories with. I'm proud of my husband who won the prize for the most moves in ten years with 21+. It was so fun being there with the person I would've been looking forward to seeing most!!

Just for fun let me explain the decor: we had 24 orchids shipped in from L.A., which served as our centerpieces and then were presented to all those who provided donations (cash, prizes, etc.). Our school colors were blue and green and IKEA has the perfect tealights, four to a pack that were placed around the orchids. We had individually wrapped cookies from our famous local bakery with HHS written on them at each place setting. My favorite part were the round paper lanterns (thank you again, IKEA) that hung at varying heights from the ceiling over the dance floor.

My favorite line: "Just let me know when you start planning the 20 year, I'd love to help!" Response: "I"m not planning the 20 year." Look of surprse, "Than who will?" "Not me." Maybe things will change in 10 years, M-A-Y-B-E!

I only had my camera on Friday so this is only some of the brave 1996 Scotsmen who rafted the Kern River!

Beckam keeping an eye on us!!
Jaden amazed us with his paddling skills!
We went out past the mass of seaweed
you can see just beyond where we are.
He wasn't the least bit afraid, little did he know what I
was feeling (the seaweed was the most unnerving part for me--
I felt claustrophobic paddling through it).

We can do this!

Just a cute picture:

Beckam Strikes Again!

Yes, those would be the keyboard keys!!
This is how much damage he can do in 3-5 min. (while I'm brushing my teeth, for example).
They are all fixed now, thankfully!

Weekend with the Wozniaks and Other Fun Stuff

Early in the week the boys and I drove up to Santa Cruz to visit my dear friend Rebecca and her family, who were vacationing there for the week.
It was a dream come true when the Philips Family moved onto Silver Dr. 18 or so years ago. Before that, I was the only little girl in the neighborhood and so b-o-r-e-d. We had so much fun riding bikes, babysitting, having sleep overs, swimming, tormenting the Miller's and all the other fun stuff neighborhood kids do.

Santa Cruz is beautiful! We enjoyed the day at the beach playing in HUGE holes dug by the men-folk and watching the flocks of pelicans fly overhead. Sadly, we came home to a very sick daddy, who was down with the flu for a good 3 days, which we think could have been induced by a very bad sunburn he got the previous Sat. (have any of you ever heard of this?). On Wed. they came to Monterey. We rode the trolley from our house to the aquarium and then had a great lunch at Bubba Gumps.

On Thurs. we had a surprise visit from the Dyer cousins (from Sac) on their way to a family reunion south of Carmel. They were only here a couple of hours but we didn't miss out on any fun. We took a walk down the beach to let the travelers stretch their legs where they enjoyed climbing the rocks, collecting crab legs, sea shells, rocks and playing in the tide pools.

The special appearance from the baby sea otter was the highlight of the excursion (and this time I had my camera)! It's the most adorable thing to watch. S(he) comes right up near the shore, floating on her back with a rock sitting on her belly. She then proceeds to repeatedly whack a shell on the rock with such persistance. I wondered why it took so much effort to crack one shell but then read at the aquarium that often the otter pups mistake rocks for shells so this may have been the case. Occasionally, the rock slides off her belly and she has to dive down and get another one. She's not at all disturbed by the adoring on-lookers.

The Wozniak's arrived on Fri. evening. We ate well (of course), had beautiful weather, Micah finally got to play Bocce on the courts near the warf (the balls are always in a locked compartment but Sat. was his lucky day)and Jaden finally got to ride a Surrey (we had to get the "limo" to fit everyone) The babies weren't thrilled about sitting in the front basket. Beckam warmed up to it but wanted to sit in his dad's lap and help him drive, which is not allowed and Carter (Wozniak's 15 mo. old) wanted no part of any of it. The Wozniak's ditched the Surrey and took Beckam to play at the beach while we rode a little further. I'm happy to report that we won the race against the other Surrey limo (which had 3 teenage kids in the back with the parent's up front--not a very equal match I admit) but our chain couldn't handle our high speed and came off just as we were gaining our distance.

Master of Destruction

This post has been brewing for awhile now but tonight was the final straw. We have racked up quite the maintenance bill at our summer home, all because of guess who? B-E-C-K-A-M!! I think it'll be taken out of his college fund. We've been here just under two months and thus far he has:

  1. Nearly broken the TV by pulling it, along with the TV stand, down on top
of himself (fortunately, Micah is part super-hero and caught it just before it squashed him). I'm sure it will be broken by the time we leave since it is a VCR combo and he thinks the VHS slot is such a fascinating hiding place for his toys.
  2. Poked 4 holes through the rice-paper/linen-like material in the accordian
room divider and pulled it down onto the table breaking the rectangular wooden
    braces covering the rice-paper/linen-like material.
  3. Threw away the cordless phone (after it had been missing a few days, I
realized it must have been trashed so Micah was nominated Dumpster Diver and amazingly recovered it!)
  4. Broke their mirror by jumping along the back of it and shattering it into
a million little pieces (replaced for $5 at WalMart)
  5. Dropped our mini DVD player (which I might add is serving as our only DVD player) as he was carrying it around in a football hold (not so cheaply replaced)
  6. Shattered many of Jaden's toy by dropping them off our balcony
  7. Busted through the screen door numerous times knocking it completely off the track...but today...it finally ripped.

On our walk the other night he also managed to get our bike lock keys out of the pocket of the jogging stroller and toss them out about half way through our walk, which I didn't realize until after we got home. I went to get the car keys so I could drive along our path to see if I could find them and guess what?! Car keys missing, too. Since nightfall was fast approaching I opted to just run it allowing me to get an extra good workout!! Luckily, we found both sets! The car keys hidding place was clearly the work of none other than Sir Beckam Nilsson. I know, I know, we could be a little more precautious and I do try but it's such a constant battle! I think he's winning.

Like Peas and Carrots

Last Thurs., Jenny, my best friend of 23 years, brought the train up from Bakersfield for a visit. (We can't seem to shake these titles given to each other in elementary school: "My best friend Jenny," "My best friend Lolly." We have lots of great friends but I suppose the titles will always remain since they've endured this long. When we were about 6 we were cruising in the Street (Jenny's madien name)stationwagon sitting in the "way, way back" (you know, facing the oncoming cars) and promised each other that we'd be each other's maids-of-honor. Our promises were easily kept (even with me at a whopping 6 months pregnant with all those other cute girls in their cute "little" dresses). As we were getting ready for bed that night, she made the observation that we'd planned every meal for the duration of her stay including appetizers and desserts but had not planned a single activity--we've always enjoyed our food!! Our lives have always revolved around what we're going to eat:
As wee little girls it was ham, cheese and Doritos sandwiches with Miracle Whip on wheat bread. Jr. High was the beginning of our annual Newport Beach summer vacations and we looked so forward to our black forest ham sandwiches from the Greek deli at the Lido with China Mist iced tea, Claim Jumper and chocolate muffins from the bakery on the boardwalk. In high school it was the Country Rose Tea Room, Taco Bell's bean and cheese burritos with no onion plus sour cream and mexi-melts. We also enjoyed lemons with salt for me and sugar for her and at my house the first thing she went for was my dad's iced tea (a favorite among many)and peppercionis.

Dessert is ALWAYS involved with the Street Family and this weekend was no exception. The crockpot had to travel from Bako with Jeremy, her husband who joined us on Friday and on Saturday evening the Fondue Fest was on!! Chocolate Fondue with strawberries, bananas, marshmallows, pound cake and cheese cake for dippin'! Yummmmmmmm! Jaden and Beckam were in Heaven! Of course the entree for the evening wasn't lacking: king crab legs, shrimp and corn on the cob with brie and apricot jam on sourdough bagettes for the appetizer. It was awesome! Thanks Jen for the incredible meal, it was so much fun.

I LOVE my Jenny friend! She's made the trek to visit us over land and sea. She flew out to Hawaii to help when Jaden was one week old (not your typical Hawaiian vacation--quite a sacrafice), she visited us in San Diego and now Monterey. She hasn't made it to Davis yet...but I'm just beginning to see the trend: Davis lacks the ocean. She's a smart girl.

Fourth of July

The excitement and anticipation of 4th of July was a little subdued for me this year since it was the first one we'd be spending without a fun family gathering. Every July 4th we enjoy hanging out with friends and family BBQing, swimming, and watching the kids set off fireworks. This one would be very different: no friends, no family, no BBQ, no swimming and no fireworks for the kids (they're illegal in Monterey). I was hopeful, nonetheless, and looking forward to a relaxing day with Micah and the kids!

I was not let down.... I can't say it was quite as cool as Dan and Minna's but it was good.

We kicked off the day with a fabulous parade downtown complete with The Bat Mobile, a lady on stilts wearing hot pink converse, marching military men from every branch of the armed forces (which brought the entire crowd to their feet with applause--it was actually quite emotional), diverse and varied bands playing patriotic music, Scooby-doo along with other characters in costume, and Polynesian dancers including Tongan drummers! The kids loved it. We even met up with some friends from the ward, who watched the parade with us and then came over for the afternoon to watch the Germany vs. Italy game (we're very sad for Jan and Birte that Germany is out).

The most spectacular highlight was the firework extravaganza we watched from our very own balcony, while Beckam slept soundly in his own little bed. We not only had a great view of the Monterey fire work show over the bay but ALL the firework shows from here to the skyline--they dotted the horizon for hours. It was awesome. It was also the first time I've seen a firework show coordinated to music that we listened to on the radio. It was a great 4th of July celebration!

Quote of the week

I like it when you guys are happy, it makes my heart good. --Jaden
I had to ask, "are we usually happy or unhappy?" and was pleased with his response, "Happy!"

“I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.”
